"That cold winter's night(way back ,on ma way to college),
is the way the old folks put it when they refer to the time wherein occurred the events here narrated. The night was that of the outgoing of '03 and the incoming of '04, and is remembered as the coldest ever known in that region. Among the trees, exposed as they are to the fierce blasts and Fog which sweep lush Sugarcane fields, this particular cold snap was especially noted. ..but the whistle behind that winter way out was more. It Still echoes....."
